Connecticut Colleges (continued from top)

A State Full of Surprises

Go to one of Connecticut's 47 colleges and universities and you'll put yourself in the middle of many things.

For instance, 20% of the nation's population lives within a three-hour drive. You can choose to visit New York or Boston on a whim and be strolling their streets within two hours.

Around you in Connecticut are many different kinds of countryside and culture, and a long history. As one of the 13 original colonies, the state has many preserved Early American and Colonial structures and sites.

Connecticut came to prominence during the 19th century, creating a legacy of Victorian architecture, military firearms, Industrial Revolution manufacturing, literature and theater, and American Impressionist art. Today, world-class theater, music and art museums contribute to its well-stocked treasure-trove for seekers of cultural pursuits. Connecticut's small size, great diversity of terrain and wide open spaces make it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Almost every type of outdoor activity has its following here. So whether you're hiking, biking and skiing, or sailing, swimming and tanning, according to the state tourism website, Connecticut is the place to do it.

From prowling the relaxing antiques areas in the Litchfield Hills, you could easily wander down into the Coastal Fairfield area for the day without spending too much time on the road. Fall Foliage is an annual attraction across the state, especially in Litchfield County and the Northeast (a.k.a. Quiet) Corner. Visit one of southeastern Connecticut's resort casinos, and from there it's an easy pop to bustling downtown Hartford and the historic Farmington Valley, or head north for an afternoon of antiquing in the Quiet Corner.

With the additional treasures of New York and Boston so close by, Connecticut colleges have a stimulating environment going for them.
